Valaikkappu (Baby Shower):
In Tamilnadu, the southern state of India baby shower is called the Valaikaappu. It’s more like a baby shower celebration or function meant to bless the pregnant woman and prepare the mother to have a safe delivery of the baby. During the function, they pray for both the mother and the to born baby to be both safe and healthy after giving birth.
The valaikkaappu is held during the 7th or 9th month of the pregnancy. The word valaikkaappu is combined of two words valaiyal meaning bangles and kaapu meaning a protective shield. The bangles used for the celebration are normally glass bangles.
Purpose of Valaikaappu:
- During the celebration on the wrists of the mother glass bangles in red and green colors are adorned in odd numbers.
- The sound made by the glass bangles induces the child’s senses and the activity of the brain.
- The most significant purpose of this ceremony is to protect and honor the pregnant woman from the evil eye.
- A paste of sandalwood and turmeric is applied to the hands and faces of pregnant women to reduce body heat.
- During the celebration fest of variety, rice is prepared in odd numbers.
- It serves the purpose of showing emotional support for the mom who is carrying the baby and bringing in all the items needed for the to-be-born baby.
