In Indian cultures, it is believed that a girl belongs to someone very special in her life, who will be given in the hands of her husband in a blissful marriage ceremony called kanyadaan. During this ceremony, the bride will be surrounded by her father, mother, brother and very close relatives.
Outside her maternal home surrounded by family members, she throws a handful of rice or wheat with the coin over her head, as this ritual is like thanking their parents for spreading happiness and prosperity in the home.
Once this is completed, she is led to the groom’s vehicle for her new home which is her husband’s home. In some, it is done once after taking the seven vows. In Hindu tradition, it is believed that the daughters are the form of the goddess Laxmi as well as a goddess of food and wealth. So it’s considered auspicious that the bride is encouraged to bless the material and spiritual prosperity behind her parents as well. The brother takes the bride to the groom’s car.
